The Maine Indian Newsletter was a labor of love for the late Penobscot poet ssipsis. From her own home, she assiduously typed up news from around the state and from around the country, producing quite a lengthy publication (often around 20 pages per issue). She had subscribers and accepted donations, and sustained this newsletter almost every month from 1966-1972.

One of the pleasures of reading this newsletter is ssipsis' artistic sensibility and humor. She often adds her own drawings and graphics to the pages by hand.  Stories re-typed from other newspapers across the country can be read alongside local reportage by Penobscot people, letters to the editors, and ssipsis' own commentary.  The topics range from local politics to the ferment of the growing "Red Power" movement.

This site is a companion to Dawnland Voices: Indigenous Writings from New England, edited by Siobhan Senier with 11 tribal editors and published in 2014 by the University of Nebraska Press.

Both the anthology and this website showcase the wide variety of literature produced by Native people from this region.

Tribal archives and contemporary authors are contributing individual items from their collections: letters, political petitions, stories, and photographs. You can explore these items on a map of the area, browse them according to the tribal nations represented here, or visit some of our exhibits.  You can read new writing in our online magazine, Dawnland Voices 2.0.
